Time Warner boosts internet speeds locally, debuts "Extreme" speed service

Did you notice your Time Warner internet was running a little faster today?

The company said it boosted its internet speeds with an overnight update.

“We substantially increased our download speeds and essentially doubled upload speeds for all of our Turbo and Standard Internet service customers,” said Mike Smith, area vice president for Time Warner Cable’s Charlotte operation.

Standard internet customers went from 7 megabits per second to 10. Turbo customers went from 10 to 15.

More speed is always good. I get 12.5 megabits per second download on my Windstream DSL connection at home. The website speedtest.net says I can download a pretty sizable movie file in nine minutes or an iTunes song in five seconds.

Time Warner is also introducing a service for those who want more speed. It's "Wideband Internet" service offers up to 50 Mbps speeds -- with a severely fast 5 Mbps upload speeds -- for, ahem, $99.95 per month.

This speed was previously offered only in Time Warner's bundled Signature Home service (click here for more on that).

Another new plan, Road Runner Extreme, delivers speeds up to 30 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream for as low as $64.95 per month when bundled with any other Time Warner Cable Service. Time Warner says Road Runner Extreme is a great alternative for families on a budget who desire extra speed.

Well sort of.

This could be a popular package and price point, at $65, if it were offered as a stand-alone. I would hope Time Warner would do this moving forward.

Anyone using these services? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Great for most customers, but my download speed actually decreased with this update, from approx. 19-21mbps to approx. 13-16mbps. My upload speed, however, did increase dramatically.

To quote Isaac Haynes from the movie, "Escape from New York", "That's a load of crap".

Interestingly my upload speed increased but download speed went down considerably.

I have signature home for about a month. Download speed is still 50245 and upload is 5113. I open Firefox and yahoo is already there in the browser to be used. I download Windows 7 ISOs in minutes. The only limit is from the website, not my network. It is well worth the 179 bundle for signature home.

At first I did not think about it, but now I noticed its now blazing fast.

I'm seeing no difference. In fact, the download speed is slightly down from my average of 6.88. Here is a speedtest from Union county:

This just kills me. I was a beta tester for the original Road Runner service when it first came to Charlotte. I was using their Turbo package when I left the Charlotte area earlier this year to move to Topsail Island.

Now I have Charter cable internet service and believe me: it ain't all it could be.

I miss TW's telephone service too. You never appreciate what you have until you lose it.

It took about 12 seconds for this article to load using regular roadrunner. Is that fast?

BS!
Download Speed: 4832 kbps (604 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 47 kbps (5.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

And here is a test on my Clearwire 4G:

Again TW is HORRIBLE!

Download Speed: 5408 kbps (676 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 623 kbps (77.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

with the constant complaints about TW, maybe they should leave town and take all their sponsorships with them. I doubt you'd get that from AT&T.

Holy speed Batman!!! I'm downloading 25Mbps with Turbo. I was only getting between 10-15.

It seems Time Warner has proclaimed the internet speeds have increased. I guess you can say anything, it doesn't make it so. My speeds have actually decreased.

Nice plug for TW. They still suck and are selling bundles we don't want. Thus, the rabbit ears and netflix at my house. Like my sprint 4g hotspot that I can take on the go.

Welcome to 2 weeks ago.

If you still don't see the speed increases, reboot your modem.

About the suggestion to reboot the modem. Already been there done that. It did not change a thing. Do you work for TWC?

My Time Warner service is also slower

My d/l is around 13 mb/s with standard. My upload, however, doesn't even break 1 mb/s.

The school I do IT work in just installed new networks. We get 50 mb/s down and 15 mb/s up from TW fiber.

I have the extreme from Time Warner and I have never gotten over 20MBPS on a speedtest. I averaged about 16MBPS. I just switched to CenturyLink 10MBPS service and tested at 10.15MBPS.
