iPhone to Verizon by Valentine's, or earlier?

A Business Week report has the iPhone landing at Verizon by Valentine's Day or earlier.

Business Week quotes an unnamed source saying Apple will introduce a Verizon version of its popular handset sometime after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January.

Verizon has scheduled a special media call on the afternoon of Jan. 6 to discuss its plans for its new LTE 4G network. Could the iPhone run on that?

This is where it gets interesting. Apple has long touted iPhone's ability to run data and voice calls at the same time. Currently, you can't do that on Verizon's 3G network. But you could on the new LTE network.

Whatever happens, industry analysts think a Verizon iPhone could cost AT&T anywhere from one million to six million customers. Business Week quotes, for example, that John Hodulik, a UBS Securities analyst has dropped his estimation of AT&T iPhone sales in 2011 to 8.8 million from 15.6 million in 2010.

Hodulik predicts Verizon sells more than 13 million iPhones next year, including more than two million to AT&T customers who switch.

Ultimately, AT&T could have an answer for Verizon. It recently bought tons of 4G wireless spectrum and has been upgrading its current 3G wireless network to a faster standard that can deliver near 4G-speed. So when customers start using those 4G phones across all networks next year, AT&T can promise faster speeds than Verizon, in theory, when customers have to fall back from 4G.

Also, if both big carriers get the Apple device, they may be forced to compete on price, which could serve customers well.

Rumors of the iphone Verizon release come up every couple months. The last recent one claimed an announcement "just after Christmas"........yada, yada, yada....

Verizon does it to slow down people from getting the iPhone 4 from AT&T. Whatever. Im just curious how Verizon will let all of the functions happen on the iPhone that they block on other phones.

No one gives a damn. iPhone is nothing compared to a droid and its been proven several times over now. It's too late for Verizon to do this, plus they offer much better. Leave the trash to AT&T. They are really used to that.

I know I should start getting all my TECH news from Business Week

Langston, ATT is nowhere near close to offering 4g speeds. Please research what the standard speed is for 4g (100Mbs). No carrier can offer it and you should see the carriers stop referring to their network as 4g. LTE will be the phrase used.

It must be true...TV read it on the Internet!!

Good lawd.

Steve Jobs has finally made up his mind!If he didn't then iOS would have become a niche phone, instead of a mainstream platform like Android is becoming. With both on Verizon, will be interesting to see the numbers 12 months from now. No matter which phone you choose, I hope you all have some Verizon Stock!

Honestly, who cares anymore? Android is becoming the dominant mobile platform and will have the majority of the market by next year. My 6 month-old Sprint EVO is STILL far and away better than the iPhone and it's already dated technology. Just wait until the dual-core Android phones come later this year--then the iPhone will for certain be relegated to niche status.

Hi Steven, in tech the needle moves so quickly and so often that what is written a few days ago becomes obsolete, much less what you wrote weeks ago.

All this iPhone stuff is speculative. I think you know that. I do think we'll see a VeriPhone as they call it. I also think AT&T is taking the right steps in some places to strengthen it's network.

Actually the ITU has yet again changed it definition for 4G, WiMax and LTE in its current form can be classified as 4G along with HSPA+.

Also, you forgot to mention that all CDMA carriers will soon launch 1X Advanced/SVDO that will allow simultaneous voice and data usage. As of right now all 4G phones require separate radio for 4G and 3G with 4G for data and 3G for voice. However with SVDO, and you're not in a 4G area, you can use data and voice at the same time.

Source? Earlier this year there were rumors that Verizon was planning to roll out VoRA to handle simultaneous voice and data (specifically for the 2011 iPhone launch, supposedly), but those rumors are still just that. One of Verizon's execs seemed rather lukewarm on the idea, too:

Every time of releasing new models of iPhones, public are being told for the upcoming issues of the gadgets. Phone companies should not delay their releasing because it may dismay the users. They should advertise first their plan if when is the exact date of releasing.

Google's Android operating system has taken the world of mobile application development by storm, for quite some time now. Granted, there are still less number of apps available for the platform compared to the other platforms like iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian but this is for sure that Google's Android has already started spreading its tendrils to other handsets.
