Apple removes controversial anti-gay app from App Store

Under pressure from several gay rights groups, including Truth Wins Out, Apple has removed a controversial app from its App Store called "Exodus International."

Created by an organization of the same name, the app was billed as something for people looking to cure themselves or someone else of homosexuality. The app claimed to provide a chance of "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus” and released last month.
Now, Exodus has been exodus-ed.

Truth Wins Out had started a petition that had reached 150,000 signatures denouncing the application. Truth Wins Out claimed the app used bad science and research as it claimed that homosexuality was curable.

Exodus International president Alan Chambers tweeted, "It’s official, the @ExodusInl App is no longer in the @AppStore. Incredibly disappointing. Watch out, it could happen to you."

What a steaming pile of BS, another reason I'm glad I sent my POS iPOD back to Apple. Funny, it's OK for straights to turn gay, but gays can't go straight, the gay lobby is so full of it.

While I'm not convinced it's ever a good idea to censor what people can or can not purchase or download for their own purposes (legally, or course) the very idea that Jesus would give a hoot about someone's sexuality is, frankly, rediculous. No true Christian believes this. And, I guess if someone WANTS to no-longer be gay, they have a right to try not-to-be (as silly as that sounds), but the "or someone else" packs the "Big Brother" "Borg" punch in the gut that makes this group disgusting.

You have got to be kidding me? You really think that people "decide" whether or not they're gay, just like you decided to be a small-minded bigot? Next thing you'll want is an app that helps black people become white and foreigners become americans. People like you are why America sucks to live in.

Let me say this again, one more time, in very clear language that everyone can understand: Apple's removing this app IS NOT CENSORSHIP. It is not possible for a private company to commit censorship; this is something only a government can do. If the government wants to tell you that you can't buy a particular app, that's censorship. If a private (or even public) company declines to sell such an app, it is their idea of good business sense but not censorship. The fact that Apple will not sell pornographic apps is also not censorship. It is their decision; they can run their company however they like, as long as it's legal.

You need to look that word up in a dictionary. You obviously do not know what it means.

Truth Wins Out is just trying to deprive a lot of women from having a loving gay husband.

South Charlotte/South Park/Ballantye might as well be the damned Japanese reactor. You can really tell the teabaggers that come out of their soccer mom coffins to trash those who want to stand up for what is right. No one is forcing anything on you. Return your damn iPod and pick up the latest Glen Beck novel.

Very, very sad. Just to think....all this, because George Bush is gone, a black man is President, and Jerry Falwell slid right down that water slide into the pits of Hell.

Putting an anti-gay app in the Apple iStore is like if you sold steaks and various cuts of meat and spent all your advertising dollars in vegan magazines

..........or like spitting on a fish. Dare to be stupid!

This was NOT an "anti-gay"app and I'm sick of hearing that. It merely offered Christian guidance on sexuality to those who voluntarily sought it, and slurred no one.

The liberal media always bows to a few radical homosexuals and THEIR bigoted agenda of attacking anyone who disagrees with them!

@9:51pm. You may have missed the part where the app was marketed that it could also be used to preach/witness/whatever to other people.

I missed nothing. It was not "marketed" that way, media distortions to the contrary.

@10:46 - I guess you'd be happy with a homosexual recruiting app if there were ever such a thing.

You could get a free toaster out of it.

some people do decide to turn gay. some of my wife's friend decided to turn gay after bad relations with men. some people are not born gay. they choose to.

Good riddance. These type of Christians need some more slapping of the bible-toting hand. Oh, and if they have a problem with it, they should just go and create their own smart phone and app store.

Why don't you redneck Christians crawl back in the hole you came out of. Because of these redneck bigots America is crawling back to the Stone Age. Homophobic asses. You think you'll go to heaven? hahahahahha

One simple question: Did every iPhone user HAVE to download the app or was it one that you had to pay for or actually choose to download? This is like going into WalMart and asking them to stop stocking red socks because I hate red socks. Did I have to buy them or take them if given away? Nope - so why should I have the right to ask them to stop stocking it?

Does Apple have to right to maintain their App Store? Yes, they retain full responsibilities as a business owner. However - if the app was not pushed to a certain group of iPhones or all then what is problem?

There they go again discouraging innovation.

I never thought that there is a anti-gay app on an iPhone. I was not able to avail this kind of app because I don't know that this exists. Well, good to know that I am enjoying various apps of iPhone.

I must say that I agree on this. And why should they have to create an anti gay app on Apple and in fact each of us is the same in the aye of the above. We must respect each others reputation because in return they must respect us too.
