iPhone monthly fee$ going down, down, down?

Several industry reports, including one from Cote Collaborative industry pricing analyst Mike Cole, say AT&T is considering a $10 reduction in the iPhone monthly service plans, when a new version of the phone debuts, perhaps as early as next month.

The iPhone fell behind the BlackBerry in the latest smartphone sales reports and AT&T, the reports say, would make the move to try to boost sales of the iPhone, which many users -- and potential users -- feel is too expensive month-to-month.

Current iPhone prices range from $69 to $129. iPhone users who do not have a texting plan pay $0.25 to receive and $0.50 to send individual messages. Individual text plans range from $5 to $20.

So to go "whole hog" with the iPhone with unlimited everything is $149 per month. Sprint, meanwhile, offers the same features for $99 per month (but Sprint does not have the iPhone).

Call me disappointed. By the headline I was expecting a HUGE drop... not $10 max.
Based on the latest numbers that show Blackberry Curves soundly whipping the Iphone in sales, Apple would be best suited to break that contract with AT&T and open it up to all companies. AT&T is too pricey.

If the iPhone was priced similar to BlackBerry data plans on VZW then it would be unstoppable. With a BlackBerry data plan you simply tack on another $30 a month for unlimited BIS service. When you add that to whatever voice plan you have it adds up to be around half of what the iPhone costs month-to-month.

I am with ATT now and will be switching to sprint once the TREO-pre comes out. The iphone now would cost me an extra 600 a year, with only a 10 reduction it still doesn't make up for it.. Here me loud Apple..reduce fees or lose more market share from volume users

I doubt that, Langston. Come on dude, this is not your realm. With Telcoms not growing as much or as fast, margins getting squeezed, T is not going to give up revenue.

Not too long ago, I read in an online technical magazine an article explaining that text messaging COSTS NOTHING for the cellphone companies providing the service, and the per-message charges they impose on their customers is nothing more than another subtle way for them to overcharge for profit. So AT&T and others who charge for messaging are taking their customers for a ride! I am so glad to have a provider that does NOT charge me for sending and receiving messages, and all customers should demand that their cellphone carriers do the same. May the buyer and user beware....

Do yourself a favor and go buy a Palm Pre next month on Sprint with the $99 Simply Everything plan. It will be a better device than the iPhone and a better plan and coverage than AT&T.

The blackberry only beat the iphone in sale because of the buy one get one free promotion by verizon.

I like the iPhone, but have opted to stay with Verizon because they have a better network and lower fees. The iPhone on Verizon's network would be unbeatable.

Only $10? Sorry, that's not good enough.

You people are morons. iPhone Internet plan is 30 bucks. Blackberry Internet plan is 30 bucks. Corporate plans are 45. Text is the same on both, it depends on what plan you get. Last time I checked my math that's the same amount. It's the same with any provider except sprint. But go ahead and go with sprint and the most powerful network. It's garbage. I went to the beach with some buddies and we all had someone different. All the commercials don't mean squat. I want results in the real world. At&t and verizon were comparable. But the sprint phone had horrible service the whole time. Let's face it. The iPhone is a better device thus at&t is the provider to go with for now.

I have an iPhone and love it. However AT&T should have a zero minute plan because their service is absolutely unusable! In order to carry out actual phone conversations I must carry a Verizon handset too. Did I mention that AT&T has fewer bars in more places?

Love my iPhone! Wish it was more than $10 but anything is better than nothing. Now our bill will be around $155 per month.

Everyone I know who owns a Blackberry regrets getting it. Everyone I know who owns an iPhone loves it. Still, a $10 price drop isn't going to sway a lot of people.

I still love my Blackberry just fine! AT&T won't lower any prices until it has competition. That competition will soon arrive in 2010 when their initial contract expires with Apple. Until then... expect to be taken to the cleaners :-)

This is interesting since Verizon Wireless and Apple have been in talks to launch a CDMA iPhone in 2010. Even better since I was told by a VZW employee (not at a store but in corporate) that I should expect an iPhone as early as Jan. 2010.

Perhaps AT&T foresees the end to their iMonopoly and is trying to preserve "some" customer base with a small price drop.

phone deals are way too expensive in USA: we should not pay for receiving phone calls [this si the case in many Euro countries I visited, maybe all EU is like that] and also texting should be free as it costs zero to companies....same as cable companies try to milk out public by charging them huge money to talk on computer phone via internet and most of us know that once you have internet line the phone line should be free ...guess they are milking people untill someone realizes whats going on, if ever...as people in US and other places too are like sheep, they just follow and do what told...
