And the best cellphone service in Charlotte is....

Got an interesting question from Twan, a young female newcomer to Charlotte. Twan is moving here next month from New York to start a new job (amazing you found one here, Twan!). Right now, she's in a month-to-month cell phone contract in the Big Apple that she'll be ending.

When she comes here, Twan wants a smart phone and a good price for it, and she was asking me who I felt had the best network in Charlotte, with price being a consideration.

I've had Cricket, AT&T (when it originally introduced GSM and $99.99 unlimited plans) and then SunCom and T-Mobile. Now I'm back to AT&T, using a 3G iPhone.

I'm jealous of the $69.99 everything plan from T-Mobile (unlimited calls/text/web) and Sprint's $99 everything plan. Both are much cheaper than the "all-you-can-eat" $120 plans from Verizon and AT&T.

I never had much problem with the SunCom/T-Mobile regional plan I had except in certain areas of south Charlotte near Sardis Road and north Charlotte, anywhere past exit 18. People tell me now, however, that T-Mobile's national service is pretty good around here and even when traveling.

My wife had Sprint during the Nextel merger days and absolutely hated it. She couldn't keep a call for more than five minutes. I've got friends now with Sprint that have no trouble with it. Cricket has unlimited local minutes and smart phone plans for as little as $40.

So there's lot of options.

My question to you is to help me find an answer for Twan.

Who's the best in town and why?

Verizon is $119 now? I need to change my plan. But Big Red has the best service Langston. I can make calls in brick buildings, in basements. Try that with your Apple i-candy!

I totally agree that Big Red is the most reliable service of all. I'm currently with Nextel and it ABSOLUTELY SUX! For some reason I believe that Sprint will not spend any money on the Nextel Network which will eventually run the Nextel subscribers over to the Sprint Network.

I have a number of friends that run off of the Verizon Network and I'm envious of them.

I'm gonna say it. AT&T in Charlotte is good

ATT bites. Verizon by far the best.

After being with AT&T for over 10 years before moving to Charlotte, I have to say Verizon. AT&T's service here sucks, I may have had a zillion rollover minutes, but never got to use them due to poor signal and dropped calls.

Verizon, it is the one and only reason I got a BlackBerry Storm instead of an iPhone.

I did not want to switch after hearing people complain about the network as much as they loved the iPhone. Holding out for a hopeful VZ iPhone.

Had used AT&T for years! Suffered dropped calls and ziilions of minutes that were never used, too. Tried Cricket, and their service was not the best either, in fact worse than AT&T, and suffered more dropped calls than AT&T. Now am on Verizon, and recently had my first dropped call after using them for over a year. So my choice would be "Big Red".

Verizon has the best coverage, I don't use their service much because everything just works.

They also have the "new every two" promotion where you get a new phone every two years. If you pick the phone online and have it shipped you get even more money toward a higher-end phone.

I haven't paid for a phone in 10 years.

Sprint is by far the best value. They have a $69.99 unlimited data plan and it includes 450 minutes. Also included is unlimited mobile to mobile - on any network, which means you basically get unlimted calls (does anyone still use landlines?) Sprint also roams on Big Red's network and the $69.99 plan lets you get an upgrade every year. Get a Pre on Sprint and you'll have no regrets.

This is a no brainer...Verizon. There just isn't any better...period.

Great question. I have AT&T.
Been out of contract for years, sporting a treo 650 with a Cingular logo. It is a brick, yes but it works for me. Just so easy to sync with desktop and the qwerty is probably the best ever made. But like a wife who has extended her welcome, it's time for a new phone.

AT&T is fine, never a dropped call: Crowders to St. Thomas. It's just expensive. Blackberry data plans irk me so Sprint seems like the best deal.

Langston do a poll on the services with locations. I mean if I go sprint will I get usable coverage on Indian Trail?

Phone choice is overwhelming these days in the best of ways though. Looking at a BB 9700, or Moment.

Alltel.

At least before Verizon screwed it up.

If you beleive in The Yankee group report released this week Sprint and Verizon virtually tied. Pricing and Data Sprint was the top. Voice Verizon came in first. Coverage is always dependent on where you live and travel. Sprint and Verizon have almost the exact same footprint nationwide because they share towers. AT&T has become a joke for voice, data, and customer support since they partnered with Apple. The IPHONE is a great phone but AT&T gave them the farm and didnt worry about the negative affect it would have on thier network. They use so much data AT&T has capicity issues and they cant build out fast enough. TMobile is great in the northeast but are not yet a national carrier to be considered.
So to answer your question, she needs to demo each company to see what works for her in her home and where she works to see how coverage works for her. Most companies have small femtocells that can correct bad coverage in homes if everything else works fine. Then decide what kind of phone she needs. If thi is a work device Blackberry is the standard with full qwerty keyboard and each vendor carries them. If she wants something cool then the IPHONE is AT&T and soon Verizon. I have been using the android device and although it is new it has impressed me. Finally, if it comes down to cost Sprint is still the lowest cost even after Verizon and AT&T annouced their new price drops this week. This new prices will only affects those people who want voice only. If you want dat you are back up to their normally high pricing. good luck

I have personal Sprint, work Verizon, and my wife has Cingular/AT&T. We live in University area and the service in my home for Sprint and AT&T was horrible until recently. But, I was able to convince Sprint to send me "Air wave box", which boosts the signal in our home and since the plans are the cheapest with Sprint, I would give my vote to Sprint. Call me biased but that is my opinion.

I never like buying cellphones because the technologies, after a couple of months, make me feel like I need a new one! That's the trick: get one while we prepare you another new one!

With so many competition, it is really hard to find the best deal, I think the AT&T option is the best.

I don't know if that's the best option because I don't believe in those Asian companies but I'll wait to see what's going to happen with it.
